Baseball Players are NOT Always Bachelors
In recent years the coverage of Major League Baseball has become greater, more pervasive AND, at times, more invasive into the lives of the players. Several have written how the years have eroded the “gentleman’s agreement” between writers and players regarding what is on and off the record.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion as to the merit of the “old school” type of baseball writing or that which fills the pages of newspaper and net today, it is easy to acknowledge that many grow weary of the constant barrage of sensationalistic attempts to boost readership by always presenting the negative side of things. Frankly, MLB Memories feels there is more good to report in baseball than is often noticed.
At the recent Kansas City Athletics reunion there was ample evidence of this truth. Many of the ballplayers brought their wives with them to the event. Certainly some were second (and even third) marriages, but most were lifelong partnerships that had grown deeper and better with the years (wine and cheese jokes will NOT be made at this point!).
It was great to meet these couples and hear, first-hand, some of their struggles, joys and memories together. In particular, we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the Diego & Emily Segui, Skip and Kathleen Lockwood, and Dave and Carol Wickersham (with whom we had the privilege of eating at the banquet). Their obvious love for one another surpassed even the love of the game. Enjoy the pictures.
