In anticipation of the coming Cactus and Grapefruit league games and fun, MLB Memories is glad to offer our own little “countdown.” We are going to follow the plan of “30 Quotes in 30 Days,” and each day between now and February 19 list a quote from someone affiliated with each MLB team. As best as we are able, we are going to take the quotes from current roster players (of course, trades can still happen) or front office personnel, and hopefully find bits of information that will help us to see each teams viewpoint going into the coming championship season.

Due to a total let down of creativity on this front, we will hear from the thirty teams according to alphabetical order. Today’s team for a quote: Oakland Athletics

At this stage of my career, I could pretend to kick the can down the road, but that’s not part of my DNA. When you’re somewhere in the middle, you’re just prolonging the process you’ll eventually have to undertake. The competitor in me wants to win every day, but I also want to create something that’ll get better year after year.

Oakland GM, Billy Beane, of Moneyball fame

“It’s not every day…only one time in six years.”

The Rockies’ Juan Nicasio speaking of taking a line drive off his head last Aug. 5 while pitching at Coors Field. The fall to the mound resulted in a fractured C-1 vertebra. Many are calling his return to the mound in Spring Training this year nearly miraculous.

“My career, every year has been better, better, better. This year (2011), I was at the bottom. So next year, I can only go up. Maybe it won’t be stressful. I’ll just be able to play. I’ll get healthy in the offseason and then next year come back and then just play. I’ll show them I’m healthy and I can still play.”

“To be honest, I haven’t really pictured myself one way or another. I’m just trying to max out wherever it is, and find myself somewhere in between both.”

Brent Morel, White Sox third baseman, when asked if he viewed himself more as a home run threat or a high-average contributor

Brett Jackson is full of energy, and Tony Campana, he keeps me young. These guys work hard and I’m trying to keep up with them.”

The countdown to Spring Training 2012 has begun! With pitchers and catchers due to report by February 19, we are now thirty (30) days away. It is probably my imagination, but I think it is feeling warmer already.

Regardless of the temperature many of the thirty Major League clubs are running “hot” with anticipation for the coming season. And while it would be silly to say every team has an equal chance at winning the World Series trophy come October, it is factual to declare that all teams are tied up as we head to Florida and Arizona to shake off the dust, scrape off the rust, size up the rookies and prospects, and get the vets ready for one more go.

“We’re kind of just bottom-fishing, trying to buy low and hopefully catch lightning in a bottle on a guy that’s maybe coming off a bad year or somebody that’s left out there with no real job that sees an opportunity.”

Diamondbacks GM, Kevin Towers, regarding his pursuit of a fifth starter
